Senior Estimator - Building Group

Location: Torrington, CT

O&G Industries, Inc., an innovative and diversified construction company located in Torrington, CT, is seeking a Senior Estimator eager to assist in leading a high impact, high performing group of men and women within our Building Group. The position is based in Torrington, CT.

Duties & Responsibilities include:


Bid Administration

  • Work with estimating team to develop subcontractor and material supplier invite list
  • Monitor coverage throughout the bid process to ensure that competitive pricing is received
  • Confirm that documents on SmartBidNet are complete
  • Prepare liability, builders risk and bonding information
  • Prepares State Submission Estimates and Ineligible and Limited Eligible Cost Worksheets for public school construction projects
  • Separates costs on CM estimates into two categories, eligible and ineligible
  • Provides cost input for grant applications (EDO49) for public school projects

Estimate Preparation

  • Creates a detailed estimate summary sheet organized by CSI code, Uniformat or unit price item number
  • Assigns CSI divisions to estimators and reviews the work scope with them
  • Prices all self-performed work and reviews all estimates that have been prepared by other estimators
  • Prices the general conditions for the project
  • Prepares RFI’s and reviews RFI’s that are prepared by others before submission
  • Prepares qualifications and exceptions to be submitted with proposal if allowed
  • Works closely with subcontractors, suppliers and other stakeholders through the bid process to understand and capture the complete scope of each trade in the scope summary sheets
  • Reviews scope sheets with other estimators
  • Reviews subcontractor and material supplier coverage prior to bid day to insure adequate coverage
  • Identify unique aspects of the project and seek specialty subcontractors and suppliers to fulfill need
  • Prepare a project schedule that can be used for pricing and communication with subcontractors and suppliers
  • Address impact of inflation on pricing
  • Reads and understands the contract with the owner and incorporates its terms into the estimate
  • Manages communication with the consultant estimators and obtains their quotations
  • Confirms project scope including building square footage
  • Attends reconciliation meetings with the design team and preconstruction manager, leads the value engineering process, attends risk analysis meetings when required, adjusts the estimate as needed, and presents final estimate to Owner

Project Knowledge

  • Reviews all project documents and understands all aspects of the project
  • Visits the project site
  • Reviews the Division 1 requirements
  • Speaks to subcontractors as necessary to understand the project scope and cost
  • Communicates with the design team, owner and preconstruction manager during estimate development

Bid Day

  • Organizes estimating team so that all quotes are received promptly
  • As quotes are received, analyzes them for completeness and enters them into the estimate
  • Reviews the scope sheets and subcontractor pricing prepared by other estimators and determines the appropriate price for each scope of work
  • Delegates issues to other estimators for resolution
  • Anticipates problem areas and has a contingency plan (estimate) so that the bid can be submitted
  • Responsible for the submission of the bid
  • Analyzes the risk of the project and recommends the overhead, profit and contingency amounts

Post Bid

  • Prepare In-Bid amounts for the job cost system.
  • Participate as requested in contract awards by negotiating scope, terms and price
  • Track costs through the job cost system and adjust cost database accordingly
  • At project completion, participate in project review and reflect lessons learned in future estimates
  • Confer with purchasing and offer input on buying opportunities
  • Participate in project review at completion and reflect lessons learned into future estimates
  • Communicate bid results to owners (private, state agencies, school building committees etc.)
  • Prepares breakdown of final CM estimate by trade/bid package for comparison of bids to budget/estimate

Subcontractor and Material Supplier Contacts

  • Seek new subcontractor and suppliers and maintain relationships with existing
  • Become aware of the strengths and weaknesses of subcontractors and suppliers

Estimating Skills

  • High level of competency with hard bid, construction management and design build estimating
  • Be able to price all divisions of work that O & G self-performs
  • Ability to manage budget during CM/Design Build estimate development
  • Keep abreast of construction inflation
  • Maintain current cost records for labor, material and equipment
  • Teach fellow estimators to estimate all divisions
  • High level of skill with lump sum, unit price and negotiated estimates
  • Ability to offer creative value engineering solutions
  • Ability to review estimates of other senior estimators
  • Understand O&G’s union affiliations and impact on pricing of self-performed work and subcontractor availability
  • Ability to scope MEP trades
  • Ability to prepare accurate conceptual estimates for proposals, sales presentations, referendum budgets or any other purpose

Marketing

  • May be asked on occasion to participate in marketing functions such as presentations to owners

Quality Control

  • Demonstrated awareness and experience of contractor quality control and incorporate its scope into self-performed work estimates

General

  • Dedicate the time necessary to prepare a winning bid and develop skill sets
  • Must be self- motivated with a strong sense of urgency
  • Must be able to manage multiple tasks and have excellent follow up skills
  • Must act professionally when dealing with fellow employees and external contacts
  • Strive to build winning relationships with other departments within O & G, including Project management, preconstructions services, field personnel and accounting
  • Participate in hiring, evaluating and managing estimating staff
  • Participate in company business development efforts to identify and track potential projects
  • Ability to participate in presentations to owners

Qualifications

  • B.S degree in engineering or construction management
  • 7-10 years of experience with a commercial or industrial general contractor
  • Detail oriented with a demonstrated ability to organize and manage detailed analysis
  • Have a high degree of competency with Suretrack, Excel, and Timberline on-screen take off/Revit
  • Possess the ability to communicate clearly both in written and verbal formats
  • The ability to work in a high pressure environment with tight deadlines
  • Strong organizational and problem solving skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • CPE certification highly recommended
